After they know AI is already in their life, show them one hands-on example of an AI being confidently wrong. Ask ChatGPT to name a book that doesn't exist. Have it do math with big numbers. Ask an image generator to draw hands. Watch it fail.

This moment is worth a hundred safety lectures. A kid who has personally watched an AI make something up will never fully trust an AI answer again. That skepticism is the single most valuable habit you can build.

Ages 6–9: keep it concrete

  • Show them a photo AI got wrong and ask why they think it messed up.

  • Rule of thumb: 15 minutes, one concept, one hands-on thing.

Ages 10–12: how does it actually learn?

This is the sweet spot. Kids this age can grasp the idea that AI learns from patterns in huge amounts of data. Try this:

  • Show them how autocomplete predicts the next word — that's the same idea powering ChatGPT, just bigger.
  • Have them ask ChatGPT the same question three different ways. Watch how the answer changes. That's prompting.
  • Talk about training data: if AI only ever saw cats, it would think dogs are weird cats. Bias, in one sentence.
  • Give them a small task — plan a birthday party menu, brainstorm a story idea — where they direct the AI instead of accepting the first answer.

Ages 13+: ethics, prompts, and real work

Teens can handle the harder conversations — and honestly, they're already having them without you. Better to be in the room.

  • Deepfakes and misinformation: show one real example, then teach the reverse image search + "who benefits from me believing this?" habit.
  • Homework and cheating: the line is "AI helped me think" vs. "AI wrote it and I turned it in." Talk about it explicitly.
  • Prompt craft: give role, give context, give constraints, ask for a specific format. Practice on a real task they care about.
  • Privacy: never paste real names, addresses, school info, or photos of people. This one is non-negotiable.

Your first 30 minutes: a script

If you have zero time and just want to start today, here's the sequence:

  • Minute 0–5: "Where do you think AI shows up in your day?" Let them list. Add three they missed.
  • Minute 5–15: Open ChatGPT (or the AI tool of your choice), together. Ask it something you already know the answer to. Look for the mistake.
  • Minute 15–25: Give them one small task to try with the AI. You watch, you don't type. They see what works and what doesn't.

What NOT to do

  • Don't lecture. If you're doing more than 30% of the talking, you've lost them.
