Level 1 — AI as a tutor, never on the assignment

Level 2 — AI on the scaffolding, not the substance
Brainstorming angles for an essay, checking whether an argument holds together, quizzing themselves before a test, cleaning up grammar on something they already wrote. The ideas and the sentences are theirs. This is the everyday default for most middle-schoolers.
Level 3 — AI as a collaborator, disclosed
Research projects, coding, presentations, anything where using AI well is itself part of the modern skill. The condition is disclosure: your child can say exactly what the AI did and what they did. If they cannot draw that line, they are not at level 3 yet.

The explain-it-back test
Here is the whole parental toolkit in one move. When the homework is done, ask your child to explain one part of it out loud, without the screen.

- "If I changed this number, what happens?"
A child who did the thinking answers these easily, even sloppily. A child who outsourced it goes quiet, gets defensive, or repeats the words on the page without touching the meaning. Run it once or twice a week, not every night. It is a spot check, not surveillance.
What to do when you find out they cheated
Assume the first instinct — punish and ban — makes things worse. It moves the behavior out of your sight without changing it.
Better sequence: name what happened without drama ("the AI wrote this, not you"), ask what made that feel like the right move (usually time pressure or not understanding the material), redo the assignment together at level 1, and agree on what level applies next time. The goal is a kid who has an internal line, not a kid who is better at hiding.
