Why homework feels different now (and it's not just the AI)

TL;DR

The way kids are taught shifted years ago, and parents used to work around it by reverse-engineering the answer. AI broke that workaround. You're now dealing with a teaching gap and a trust gap in the same moment — and both need solving over the same piece of homework.

If you have opened your kid's math homework lately and thought "this is not how I learned this," you are not imagining it. Long before AI showed up at the kitchen table, the way kids are taught had already shifted under our feet. Math methods changed. Reading instruction swung back and forth. Writing got restructured around new frameworks with names that mean nothing to most parents.

That shift used to be manageable, because even when the method changed, the parent could usually still get to the right answer their own way and reverse engineer an explanation. You did not need to know the new method. You just needed to know the subject.

AI changes that equation in a specific way. Now your kid has a tool that can produce a correct looking answer without your kid, or you, ever touching the actual concept. So the old workaround, "let me just show them how I'd do it," stops being enough. You are not just facing a new method anymore. You are facing a finished piece of work and no easy way to tell how much of it your kid actually did.

Two different problems wearing the same disguise

Parents tend to describe this as one problem: "I cannot help with homework anymore." It is actually two.

The first is a teaching gap. The concept itself has not changed, multiplication is still multiplication, but the path to it looks unfamiliar, and that unfamiliarity makes parents hesitate to jump in at all, even when they understand the underlying idea perfectly well.

The second is a trust gap. Once AI is in the picture, "did my kid finish this" and "did my kid understand this" stop being the same question. A completed worksheet used to be reasonable evidence of learning. It no longer is, on its own.

Most tools out there solve for one of these and ignore the other. Homework solvers make the first problem worse by removing the kid from the process entirely. Why is my kid's homework taught so differently than when I was in school?

Teaching methods in math, reading, and writing were restructured over the last decade, well before AI arrived. The underlying concepts are the same — multiplication is still multiplication — but the path students are expected to show has changed, which is what makes the page look unfamiliar.

Why can't I just show my kid how I learned to do it?

Ask two or three questions out loud about the reasoning, not the answer: why this step, what would change if a number changed, explain it back in your own words. A child who did the thinking answers quickly; a child who pasted an answer stalls on the reasoning.
