Is Google Gemini safe for kids? A parent's honest assessment

Gemini is the assistant most families end up using without choosing it. It ships on Android, sits inside Google Workspace for Education accounts, and appears in Search results as an AI overview. So the question is rarely whether to allow it — it is how to set it up.

Age rules

• Teens can use Gemini with a Google account meeting the local minimum age, typically 13 in the US and UK.
• Younger children can access a supervised version through a Family Link-managed account, with additional safeguards applied.
• School accounts run under the district's Workspace for Education settings — availability is the school's decision, not yours.

What the controls actually give you

• Family Link lets you allow or block Gemini on a supervised account and see app activity.
• Google Activity controls let you turn off saving Gemini conversations to the account.
• Content safeguards are stricter on supervised accounts than on standard teen accounts.
• There is no per-topic filter — you cannot restrict it to homework help only.

Where it still slips

Three things, in the order they will actually affect you. First, confidently wrong answers, especially on history dates, science specifics and anything local. Second, the ease of pasting an assignment in and getting a finished answer — the homework problem, not a safety problem. Third, ambient exposure: AI answers appear in Search whether or not your child opened an assistant.

Set it up in ten minutes (step by step)

• Open the Family Link app, pick your child, then Controls > Apps, and set Gemini to allowed or blocked. For under-13s keep the account supervised rather than letting them create a standalone Google account with a fake birth year.
• In the child's Google Account, open Activity controls and turn off Gemini Apps Activity so conversations are not saved to the profile.
• On the same screen, turn off personalisation from Search and YouTube history if it is on.
• On the phone, decide whether Gemini replaces Google Assistant on the power button — if it does, it is one press away at any moment, which is worth knowing.

• Do the fact-check habit once a week: ask it something you already know the answer to, and let your child catch the mistake.

The school Chromebook problem

This is the part most parents miss. If your district issues Chromebooks or Workspace for Education accounts, Gemini availability is a district admin setting. Nothing you configure at home applies there — different account, different rules, and often no notification to families when the setting changes. Two questions to email the school: is Gemini enabled for my child's account, and is conversation data retained under the district's agreement? Both have short, concrete answers.

AI Overviews: exposure without an app

Even with the Gemini app blocked, AI-generated answers appear at the top of Google Search results. Your child will read AI output whether or not they ever open an assistant, and those summaries carry the same confident-but-wrong risk with none of the framing. This is a reason to teach source-checking rather than rely on blocking — "scroll past the summary and open two of the links" is a rule a 10-year-old can follow.

Gemini vs ChatGPT for a family

• Under 13: Gemini is easier to govern, because Family Link supervision is more mature than ChatGPT's parental linking.
• Teens: roughly equivalent on content safety; ChatGPT has clearer conversation controls, Gemini has deeper device and school integration.
• Homework risk: identical. Both will produce a finished assignment from a photo of a worksheet in seconds.
• Default exposure: Gemini is higher, because it is on the phone and in Search without anyone installing it.
