An area model is multiplication broken into a grid. Instead of stacking two numbers and carrying digits, the numbers get split into tens and ones, laid out as a rectangle, and multiplied piece by piece. Same answer as the way you learned it, different path there.
Ten frame
A ten frame is a small grid, two rows of five, used to help a kid see a number's relationship to ten at a glance instead of counting one by one. It is the foundation for a lot of the mental math your kid will do later.
